Protection and conservation of the Yanasenega wetlands, an ancient ecosystem located in the rural community of San Pedro de Casta that contributes to Lima’s water security.
Located in the district of Huarochirí, in the central eastern region of Lima, is the town of San Pedro de Casta, where, on May 16, the kickoff workshop for the project “Protection and Conservation of the Yanasenega Bofedal, an ancient ecosystem located in the peasant community of San Pedro de Casta that contributes to Lima’s water security” was held. At the community center of San Pedro de Casta, more than thirty leaders, farmers, citizens, and authorities gathered to identify and collaboratively analyze the various climate and environmental threats affecting the bofedales in the area—ecosystems that are vital due to their water storage and supply capacity, not only for the community but also for the city of Lima.
As a result, a series of activities were proposed, aimed at protecting the Yanasenega bofedal, improving the livestock grazing system, promoting the inclusion of women and youth in traditional practices, and encouraging greater participation in decision-making spaces. In this way, AQUAFONDO, within the framework of the Small Grants Program of the Fundación Futuro Latinoamericano and the Climate and Development Knowledge Network – FFLA-CDKN, will implement the project with the goal of contributing to water security for the local population and for the city of Lima, as well as improving the productive system and livelihoods through ecosystem-based adaptation measures that incorporate gender and social inclusion approaches. The inputs gathered collaboratively during the workshop will be integrated by AQUAFONDO to begin project implementation.
